GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Three masked men broke into a couple's Grand Forks home demanding drugs and money, and fled after beating the husband and killing the couple's Chihuahua, police said Tuesday.
Police said the trio broke into Carmen and Sherman Jones’ trailer home early Monday wearing dark clothes, gloves and masks, the Grand Forks Herald reported.
Sherman Jones, who was awake at the time of the break-in, was beaten to the ground with a club. He was treated at a local hospital for head and body injuries and released. Jones told police that he did not recognize the men and didn't know why they were asking for drugs and money.
Police Sgt. B.A. Johnson said investigators believe the Joneses were targeted.
“We're not sure what that reason is, but we don't believe it's a completely random thing,” he said.
Two of the men were described as being about 6 feet tall, with average builds and dark hair. They may be in their late 20s.
The third appeared to be in his mid to late teens with a slim build, and about 5-foot-8 with blond hair.
Police believe the robbers left on foot and then fled in a vehicle.
