The Dickinson Trinity boys and girls track and field teams were waiting for its relays to qualify for the Class B state meet.
The Titans don’t have to wait any longer after the boys 3,200-meter relay and the girls 1,600 relay both qualified for state during the Badlands Conference Meet on Tuesday at the Badlands Activities Center.
“We’ve been anticipating when we are going to start getting our relays in,” Trinity senior Andrea Jirges said. “I think that’s where the main excitement came from.”
Trinity has been close to qualifying its relays the last few meets and head coach Craig Kovash said it was going to happen sooner or later.
“Those are some things that we were thinking we might be able to get in,” he said.
The 3,200 relay group that consisted of Alex Binstock, Mitchell Meyer, Brady Fettig and Paul Gardner ran a time of 8 minutes, 32.32 seconds.
In the final event, the Titans’ girls 1,600 relay team of Kaitlyn Grinsteinner, Selina Kudrna, Morgan Kuntz and Jirges met the exact state meet qualifying time of 4:16.24.
Jirges ran the final leg of the race against Bowman County senior Erika Olson and Mott-Regent junior Marah Friez. The three competed against each other in the 400 dash when the finish was Olson, Friez and Jirges. The 1,600 relay finish was exactly the same.
Olson also ran state-qualifying times in the 100 (12.71), 200 (26.58) and 400 (1:01.25). The 1,600 relay win was at 4:14.43. She won the 100.
“We’ve been working for that for a really long time and it’s good to finally get it,” Olson said.
Watford City led the way with 121 team points, Mott-Regent came in second with 84 and Bowman County had 82.
Friez led the Wildfire, winning the 200 (26.48) and 400 (1:01.28) and taking second in the 100 (12.73).
“We just come in with confidence every time and we have the mentality that we are going to do well,” Friez said. “We push each other to do well.”
Also on the girls side, Killdeer’s Taylor Boster continues to have outstanding senior season. She won the shot put at 38 feet, 9 inches and the discus (124-5), both state-qualifying standards. She said she wouldn’t be where she is today without the help of her twin brother Kyle.
“I definitely chase Kyle, because he is the guy and he does throw farther,” she said with a laugh. “He does push me a lot and he knows what I’m capable of doing and I do the same for him.”
Kyle Boster had a good day of his own, winning the discus (144-9) and coming second in the shot put (43-10). His teammate, Nick Klatt, finished first in the shot put (48-11) and third in the discus (131-7).
“We bring our competition to every meet,” Kyle Boster said. “He pushes me hard in shot put and I push him discus. It’s great to have that friendly competition along with you all the time.”
On the boys side, the throwing performances helped the Cowboys to a team win with 116 points. Bowman County finished second (89) and Hazen was third (71).
Adding to the Killdeer wins was Lewis Keller, who won the 100 (11.29) and the long jump (20-5½). He also aided the 800 relay with Tucker Beck, Lewis Dobitz and Hunter Lincoln in a time of 1:35.26.
“I’m pleased with how I did today,” Keller said. “All of our relays did really well today.”
Michael Palczewski led the Bulldogs with two individual wins in the 200 (23.27) and 400 (51.43).
One runner that had his sights set on running state-qualifying times was Beach freshman Hunter Weinreis. He won the 1,600 (4:50.16) and 3,200 (10:28.27) runs, but fell just short of qualifying times.
“I wanted to qualify for the mile and two mile today, but that might not have happened,” Weinreis said before knowing his official times. “I really want to make it to state and I wanted to do really well.”
Trinity’s newest qualifier was Ben Gordon. The junior won the javelin with a throw of 167-4. Kovash knew Gordon was capable of that distance.
“Ben’s been really close and he threw well today and got in,” Kovash said.
