Dickinson State University recognized Trevor Willis and Jennifer Hartman as its senior athletes of the 2011-12 school year on Wednesday night.

Willis was named the Harry J. Weinbergen Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year and Hartman was named Loraine C. Schumacher Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year.

Willis had an outstanding football career for the Blue Hawks, playing mostly defensive back, until concussion symptoms sidelined him for good following the 2010 season.

He was, however, a three-time Dakota Athletic Conference track and field champion and a three-time NAIA national championship meet qualifier.

In March, he was awarded NAIA All-America honors for his finish in the indoor heptathlon. He was a national placer in the 2011 outdoor decathlon, an event he will compete in again later this month at the NAIA outdoor national championships in Marion, Ind.

Hartman was a four-time DAC scholar athlete in both volleyball and track and field. She was the DAC freshman of the year in 2008 and was twice an all-DAC selection.

In 2009, Hartman won the DAC championship in the long jump. This year, she has qualified for the NAIA national meet in the long jump, triple jump and high jump.
