Many Blue Hawks hit their marks, despite wind, at final regular-season meet

Thursday started out as a beautiful day for a track and field meet.

Then, as it does in southwest North Dakota, the wind picked up.

A gusty northwest wind helped and hindered athletes during the Dickinson State Open at the Badlands Activities Center, a meet held for old Dakota Athletic Conference teams in place of the conference championship.

“It was really nice day for us,” DSU head coach Pete Stanton said. “Obviously the wind played an effect in anything from the 400 (meters) on up. It really caused havoc on those events. But, on the plus side, it was definitely a friend of the people in the field events.”

While some athletes struggled running against gusts of up to 40 mph, others found it quite helpful.

For instance, sophomore Brady Sundheim soared to a personal-best leap of 49 feet, 6½ inches to win the men’s triple jump and Fred Agbaje, a DSU runner competing unattached this season, cruised to a winning time of 10.31 seconds in the 100 meters. Both had the wind at their backs.

“The wind did help, but I feel like I was coming on strong at the end of the meet anyways,” Sundheim said.

One Blue Hawk didn’t even need a push from the wind to fly to a record-breaking day.

Senior Jennifer Hartman, in her final home meet, broke a 30-year-old school record in the long jump with a mark of 19-2¾.

The women’s long jump was the first field event of the meet. It was held in the late morning when the wind was more calm.

“It was early on when the wind wasn’t blowing as bad. It didn’t help us out quite as much,” said Hartman, who was named the DAC outstanding senior female athlete.

Hartman surpassed the old mark of 19-1½ set by Gail Havelka in 1982.

DSU junior Brianny Williams was second in the event with a NAIA national-qualifying standard of 18-11¾. Williams also broke her own school record in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.26 seconds.

“Our two long jumpers had outstanding days,” Stanton said.

Hartman was second in the high jump behind teammate Hailey Schaper, who jumped 5-5 while Hartman went 5-3.

She was also second in the triple jump. Winner Kathleen Mulligan of Carroll College had a huge leap of 40-2¼. Hartman tied a season-best jump of 37-9½.

Hartman will compete in all three events at the NAIA national championships.

“I’m really excited,” she said. “When I get there, I’m sure I’ll be nervous, but you’ve just got to kind of compete and get one good jump in there.”

DSU sophomore Brittany Young just missed qualifying in the 1,500 meters, coming up about 4 seconds short with a time of 4:44.23. She also anchored the 1,600 relay team to a win in 4:18.

The Blue Hawk women’s 400 relay team clocked a winning time of 50.26. Marissa Stanton was a part of both relays and won the 400 in 1:01.75.

DSU’s men and women both compiled the most points.

The Blue Hawk women edged Jamestown College 211 points to 208 while the men had 206.5 to race past the second-place Jimmies’ 135.

While DSU’s men added some national qualifiers, most were at the NAIA’s B standard, which didn’t automatically punch their tickets to Marion, Ind., for the national championships.

“We’ll have some decisions to make on the men’s side because we can only take three. We have about five or six B standards,” Stanton said. “That’s the way that goes, but I think it’s nice that we have that decision to worry about because we really had an outstanding performance on both sides.”

Sophomores Jordan Buechler and Tyler Lalim each qualified with B standards. Lalim won the javelin at 187-5 while Buechler topped out at 15-5 to take second in the pole vault.

One Blue Hawk who will be going to nationals is senior Tyler Schmidkunz. He took second and qualified in both the hammer throw (172-3) and shot put (50-8¼). He was third in the discus (144-4).

Valley City State’s Darien Moore continued his dominance over the former Dakota Athletic Conference area competitors in the throws, winning the discus (157-6), hammer (197-6) and shot put (56-4¾).

“I’m extremely happy for Tyler Schmidkunz, a senior who qualified for us that had been right on the edge most of his career,” Stanton said. “You want guys like that to make it. He’s done everything we ever asked of him and he’s put the time and work into it. It’s really nice for him to be able to go the nationals.”

DSU sophomore Nathan Magstadt won the 110 hurdles in 14.34 seconds and the 400 hurdles in 54.11 and helped the 400 relay team to an uncontested winning time of 43.36. An NAIA All-America finisher in the 400 hurdles last season, Magstadt has run only the B standard this season.

Sophomore Andrew Knebel tied for the win in the high jump at 6-3¼, sophomore Johnpaul Williams won the long jump in 22-11¾.

For unattached runners, former DSU standout Sean Pickstock of the Bahamas proved a good rabbit for Carroll’s Benjamin Cutler to chase. Pickstock’s winning time of 20.7 seconds helped Cutler reach the NAIA A qualifying standard time of 21.5.

In the 800, the wind kept ex-Blue Hawk Ismael Arzola from helping current DSU runner Dustin Sandbak from qualifying. Arzola had a time of 1:57.35, coming out ahead of Sandbak’s 1:58.99.

The busiest Blue Hawk of the day was Trevor Willis, who was named the DAC’s outstanding senior male athlete.

Gearing up for the decathlon at the national meet, Willis competed in five events. He won was second in the long jump, fourth in the pole vault, ran in the winning 400 relay and the third-place 1,600 relay. He took a no-height in the high jump.

“I would like to have a couple better performances, but this time basically I just want good performances and know what I need to work on in the next two weeks in practice before nationals,” Willis said.
