FARGO — James Kramer took careful consideration when forming his doubles teams for the Dickinson High girls tennis team.

That consideration has gone a long ways.

The Midgets had their No. 3 doubles take first place at the Fargo Invitational on Saturday.

“They carried over their intensity from the day before,” Kramer said.

The team of Mariah Jorda and Meryl Kovacs at No. 3 doubles was formed just a little over a month ago and Kramer said they complement each other very well.

“They’re both very quick and they cover the court well,” Kramer said. “They just play with a lot of energy. They are playing very well right now.”

Dickinson also had multiple wins in the consolation rounds from No. 3 singles McKenna Love and No. 6 singles Irland Jung. Jung, who is an eighth-grader, was just brought up this week to play varsity.

“Irland making it to the consolation semifinals and she played very well,” Kramer said. “That’s nice to see them play well.”

Kramer said this type of tournament is a good indicator on what to expect for the West Region tournament that starts on Thursday in Bismarck.

“The similarities between this tournament and WDA are really close,” Kramer said. “At WDA we are limited to only three singles and two doubles. Here there were 17 teams and over 200 kids.”

After finishing the tournament, Kramer could see the confidence the Midgets gained.

“We need to be confident going into WDA and take every match point-by-point and game-by-game,” Kramer said. “There’s upsets along the way and we want to be one of those teams that are peaking at the right time.”
