Honeyman sets top mark in triple jump

Abby Honeyman wanted to reach 36 feet in the triple jump by the end of the season.

Abby Honeyman wanted to reach 36 feet in the triple jump by the end of the season.

Not only did the Mott-Regent sophomore accomplish that goal Tuesday at the Dickinson Trinity Last Chance track and field meet, she exploded for the best mark this season at the Class B girls level.

Abby Honeyman won three events, including the triple jump where she went 36 feet, 6½ inches at the Badlands Activities Center.

“That was my goal coming into the season,” Honeyman said. “I really wanted a 36. I didn’t know if I was able to because I had been scratching 36 jumps this year.”

Honeyman not only won the event, she beat Hettinger-Scranton sophomore Cassie Holt, who held Class B’s previous best leap of 36-3 coming into the day.

Honeyman said she has had trouble getting past Holt this season. Now the sophomores take Class B’s top two triple-jump seeds into this weekend’s Southwest Region meet, which begins at 9:30 a.m. at the BAC.

“Competing against her, it kind of got in my head a little bit,” Honeyman said. “It was really nice to get that out today. With the warm weather, I just loosened up.”

Honeyman also improved her time in the 300-meter hurdles (47.12 seconds) and won the 100 hurdles (16.22).

She wasn’t the only multiple winner at the meet either.

Bowman County junior Michael Palczewski won all four events he entered, including a school-record finish of 50 seconds in the 400 meters.

“He’s an amazing kid,” Bulldogs head coach Jon Jahner said. “He’s talented. He’s something else. It was a good race for him. We’ve given him a break from the 400 for a couple weeks. I told him, Mike, it’s a beautiful day. We’re going to come back to your bread and butter here. We want to see what you can do. Just open it up and let ‘er buck.”

Palczewski didn’t reach state-qualifying times in winning the 100 (11.5) and 200 (23.26), though he is qualified in those events. He anchored the 1,600 relay team to a qualifying time of 3:35.76.

Elsewhere, Beach freshman Hunter Weinreis won the 1,600 (4:42.82) and 3,200 (10:13.12) and Mott-Regent senior Tanner Vesledahl took first in the 110 and 300 hurdles with times of 16.49 and 43.13 seconds, respectively.

Trinity logged a pair of surprising new state qualifiers, as well as one it had on its wish list.

The girls 400 relay team of Selina Kudrna, Kelbie Ficek, Maddie Homleker, Andrea Jirges won with a qualifying time of 52.55 seconds.

The Titans’ real shocks came in the girls pole vault where McKenzie Kostelecky hit 9-6 after never having surpassed 8 feet coming into the vent.

Also, the boys 1,600 relay team put together a runner-up time of 3:36.13 to sneak into state.

“It was a perfect day for anything around the track,” Trinity head coach Craig Kovash said. “If you didn’t get it in today around the track, it’s going to be tough to get it in. We just had no wind.”

Dickinson High sent a handful of athletes to the event and added Joseph Sickler and Austin Mack to its list of open 800 runners at the Class A state meet.

Sickler won in 2:00.14 with Mack right behind him at 2:01.01.

Dickinson’s Collin Theilen also made a state-qualifying height of 12-6 to win the pole vault.

Bowman County senior Erika Olson won the girls 200 (26.95) and 400 (1:00.71) while taking second place behind Mott-Regent’s Marah Friez in the 100. Friez ran a 12.82 with Olson coming in right behind her at 12.93.

The two have battled in the 100 and 200 all season.

Killdeer twins Kyle and Taylor Boster won the boys and girls discus, respectively. Kyle had a throw of 136-8 while Taylor had a 119-5.

Hettinger-Scranton’s girls 800 relay team of Paige Gravning, Cassie Holt, Kaycee Schwind, Kaitlin Reitz took first with a qualifying time of 1:50.73.

Killdeer’s boys won the 400 and 800 relays with qualifying times of 44.96 seconds and 1:33.51, respectively.
