CLASS B STATE TRACK: Trinity wins 3,200 boys relay title; Hettinger-Scranton's Kristy takes high jump

BISMARCK — Dickinson Trinity senior Brady Fettig had his reservations about joining the track and field team before the season started.

It’s crazy how quickly doubts can fade.

Fettig and the Titans’ 3,200-meter boys relay ran away as state champions at the Class B state track and field meet Friday at the Bismarck Community Bowl.

“At the beginning of the season, I didn’t even think I was going to go out,” Fettig said. “These guys convinced me to and to get a state championship, that’s great.”

Fettig’s teammates were junior Dylan Gress, junior Alex Binstock and senior Paul Gardner. Trinity ran a season-best time of 8 minutes, 26.45 seconds, which was two seconds better than runner-up Rugby.

“I just wanted to stay within distance of the leader to make it easier for Alex and Brady to do work,” Gress said.

The quartet will be back to run the 1,600 relay during today’s competition. Binstock said winning the 3,200 relay should transfer into a solid performance in the 1,600 relay.

“This just gives us confidence boost,” Binstock said. “Knowing that we can run in the top of the pack, we can do well in the 1,600 relay.”

Gardner was breathing heavily after running the anchor leg of the relay. He said he couldn’t be more proud of his teammates.

“We knew that we hadn’t run our best times yet,” Gardner said. “We all knew that we had a little more to give and this was our last chance we had this year. We came out and everybody showed so much heart. It was incredible.”

The Titans ended the first day in second place with 18 points.

Trinity got points from junior Ben Gordon, who placed fourth in the javelin, and senior Mitchell Kovash, who placed sixth in the pole vault at 11 feet, 6 inches. Gordon threw 165-2, though his best throw of the season was almost seven feet longer.

“It could have been better, but you realize deep down that you took fourth at the state meet,” Gordon said. “There are a lot of people that don’t get that opportunity.”

Trinity head coach Craig Kovash is happy where the team sits after the first day.

“We were real proud with the boys and the way that they competed,” he said. “They competed hard and this was really not expected, but it’s a nice surprise.”

The other individual winner from the area was in the high jump. Hettinger-Scranton junior Stephen Kristy came into the state meet with the best jump and matched his 6-4 height to win a state title.

“I’m satisfied with 6-4,” Kristy said. “It was a little disappointing, because I wanted to go higher.”

The competition Kristy faced was much different than during the regular season. Kristy and Lisbon’s Nick Anderson each jumped 6-4, but missed on the ensuing 6-5 attempts. The difference between first and second place came down to misses.

“It was nerve-wracking, but it’s more fun to jump against competition” said Kristy, whose title comes five months after injuring his leg in the Hettinger-Scranton basketball team’s bus crash in January.

Bowman County’s Tanner Fischer was fourth in the pole vault (12-0) and Heart River’s 3,200 relay team finished fourth.

In the triple jump, New Salem-Almont’s Zach Cofer placed sixth (41-4) and Richardton-Talyor’s Cory Rebel took seventh (41-2½).

Beach’s Landon Lechler finished eighth in the shot put (45-9½), while Hazen teammates Austin Cieslak and Blaze Sommer placed fourth and seventh, respectively.

Hazen also had Tyler Parker win the javelin (176-5) while Beach’s Jake Hardy placed sixth (161-9).

On the girls side, Mott-Regent’s Abby Honeyman came into the meet with the best triple jump leap in Class B at 36-6½. However, it wasn’t the day the sophomore wanted. She placed fourth (34-4½).

Though Honeyman has higher aspirations, with two seasons of track and field remaining, she now has a new goal in mind.

“My goal is to get a 37 for sure,” Honeyman said. “Hopefully I’ll be able to get that in the next few years.”

Honeyman has the second-fastest time going into the 100 hurdle finals (15.84). She also qualified for the finals in the 300 hurdles (47.96). Since she has one less event to worry about tomorrow, she hopes to be fresher for the hurdles and 800 relay.

“I hope so,” Honeyman said. “I’ll have some good competition to run against and I’ll get to run against (Langdon’s McKenzie) Hart finally, so that should be fun.”

Trinity junior McKenzie Kostelecky finished fourth in the pole vault at 9-6, an event that stretched late into Friday evening. All classes got the pole vault out of the way on the first day because of inclement weather conditions expected today.

Trinity senior leader Andrea Jirges didn’t want her season to end and she proved it on the track.

Jirges picked to run in all four relays and hasn’t thought twice about her decision. The Titans placed sixth in the 3,200 relay (10:14.05).

“It’s very special,” Jirges said. “Other team sports are awesome too, but this is the hardest sport that I’ve probably ever been in. Sharing the pain and victory with three other people that are working just as hard as you do is the greatest feeling ever.”

The Titans had two surprises on the track, qualifying the 400 relay (51.92) and 800 relay (1:49.78) teams in the finals. Jirges couldn’t be happier to be able to have another run at a better time.

“It’s awesome how we finished today, but knowing we have tomorrow to get even better is the great opportunity,” Jirges said. “I’m glad doing all relays this meet. They are definitely more fun than opens.”
