4 Hawks earn All-America honors at NAIA national track and field championships

MARION, Ind. — Four Dickinson State athletes earned NAIA All-America honors Saturday, the final day of the national track and field championships.

Blue Hawks sophomore Nathan Magstadt picked up his second All-America honor of the weekend, finishing fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in a personal-record time of 51.93 seconds. The Dickinson native had a fifth-place finish in the 110 hurdles Friday.

“It was a pretty awesome feeling,” Magstadt said. “I had high hopes for the season. Nationals rolled around and I guess I saved my best performances for this weekend.”

Sophomore Brittany Young had a fifth-place finish in the 800 with a time of 2:12.68 and sophomore Hailey Schaper, a Killdeer High School graduate, took sixth in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 6 inches.

Sophomore Brady Sundheim, a Sidney, Mont., native, finished seventh in triple jump with a leap of 48-5½.

That gave the Blue Hawks seven different All-America awards for the weekend.

“Coming in, if we would have said we would have had seven all-Americans out of the thing, we would have taken that,” DSU head coach Pete Stanton said. “They performed as well as any team we’ve had at the nationals, as far as performing up to the best of their ability and going in and performing as well as they could. It was as pleasant of a national meet as we’ve had. We’re very proud of them.”

The DSU men finished 17th with 16 team points. The women had 8.5 points to finish 33rd.

Tyler Schmidkunz, a Bismarck native, finished 14th in the shot put with a throw of 52-9½.

Johnpaul Williams didn’t get a qualifying height in the men’s pole vault, neither did Jennifer Hartman in the women’s high jump.
