Contestants adjust to conditions to win at DHS Memorial Day Rodeo

The wind was a problem for just about everyone with a rope in their hand Monday at the Dickinson High Memorial Day Rodeo.

Not Jordyn Schaefer though.

The Des Lacs cowgirl said she wasn’t bothered by the cold west wind that blew across the Dickinson State Outdoor Arena throughout the nine-hour rodeo, a North Dakota High School Rodeo Association event.

She embraced the conditions, which included a few rain showers, and picked up wins in the breakaway roping and team roping.

“When you’re just standing around, it bugs you,” Schaefer said of the wind. “But once you back into the box, the wind really doesn’t bug you when you back in there. You’re just concentrating on your run. Some people, it messes up their run.”

Schaefer said a slow calf and a smart move by her horse helped her to a winning time of 3.3 seconds in the breakaway roping.

She partnered with Lane Dahl to win the team roping in 10.91 seconds.

Dahl, from Sawyer, was also a two-event winner. He had the fastest run in the steer wrestling with a time of 5.56 seconds while even some of the state’s leading bulldoggers had problems with a tough group of steers.

He said the team roping went much better than he expected.

“It didn’t go too bad. I just kind of wanted to do good today,” Dahl said. “When we walked in the arena, I was like, ‘Oh this ain’t gonna be good.’ I could hardly swing my rope. But when we got out there, I didn’t really notice it. It just did what I had to do.”

The duo came in just ahead of Beach’s Logan Nielsen and Hebron’s Chance Glass, who finished second with a time of 11.34.

In the saddle bronc riding, Richardton’s Dalton Rixen kept his lead in the NDHSRA season standings with a winning 69-point ride. He edged Killdeer’s Wyatt Bice.

“I was just giving ‘em my all,” Rixen said. “You’ve got to do it. Make the best of it.”

Hazen’s Siggy Scheid won a pair of events, capturing the best times in the barrel racing and pole bending.

Scheid cruised to a win in the barrels, clocking a 16.695-second run that beat runner-up Katelyn Schaffner of Bismarck by more than two-tenths of a second.

She weaved a much closer victory in the poles, finishing in 21.444 seconds. Runner-up Chantel Fettig of Kintyre had a 21.461.

Lane Rossow of Herreid, S.D., had a 15.96-second run to win the tie-down roping, an event with its fair share of uncooperative stock to go along with the poor weather conditions.

Mandan’s Teddi Schwagler won the goat tying in 7.65 seconds.

Logan Berg of Mandan won the bareback riding with a 61 to maintain a hold on his lead in the state standings.

His teammate, Weston Hartman, also had a strong day.

Hartman was the only other bareback rider to score a qualified ride, a 52 in the day’s first event that began just after 10 a.m. He then waited until nearly 7 p.m. and was the only of 20 bull riders to hold on for 8 seconds.

Hartman had a 70-point ride to win.

In the boys cow cutting, Riley Rustad of Kindred edged Bismarck’s Colt Roshau by a point with a 73. Watford City’s Samantha Jorgenson scored a 74 to beat Schwagler’s 73 in the girls cutting.
