CARRINGTON — The Bowman County girls golf team had mixed results on Tuesday during the first round of the Class B state tournament.
Yet, the Bulldogs had a better day than they thought they would at the CrossRoad Golf Course.
Bowman County ended the first 18 holes of the two-round tournament in third place, just 13 strokes behind leader Kindred, thanks to strong play from its Nos. 3 and 4 golfers.
“I was hoping maybe sixth or seventh today,” Bulldogs coach Don Groll said. “But, we finished a lot better than that.”
Jessica Hill, the team’s No. 4, shot an 88 and Mariah Lockert, the No. 3, had an 89 to finish in the top 20 and lead the team.
Senior Kayla Palczewski, the team’s No. 1 golfer, had a 94. Mataya Seamonds shot a 100 to round out the Bulldogs’ team score. Karly Palczewski, the team’s No. 2, had a 101 while Kaitlyn Hill rounded out Bowman County’s scoring with a 122.
“It was one of those survival days,” Groll said. “Just survive (and) post an 18-hole score.”
Region 5 champion Hazen, a team the Bulldogs haven’t beaten this season, is in second place with a 363. Kindred shot a 358.
Larimore’s Haily Abel and Hatton-Northwood’s Olivia Knutson each shot a 9-over-par 81 to tie for the first-day individual lead. Hazen’s Jinny Miller and Kindred’s Laura Podolak are tied for third with 83.
Heart River had two golfers who individually qualified for the tournament. Mary Hlebechuk shot an 89 and Jada Mattson a 96.
