OXBOW — Dickinson Trinity’s state championship hopes took a hit Tuesday at the Class B state boys golf tournament.
Hampered by unfavorable weather conditions, the Titans posted some of their highest scores of the season and ended the first round of the two-day tournament in fifth place and 37 strokes behind leader Kindred.
Heart River eighth-grader Joey Wagner was the top Region 5 golfer on the day, carding a 10-over 82 to finish in a three-way tie for 10th place.
Wagner had the best score of any player from the western part of the state as teams from eastern regions dominated both the team and individual play.
Kindred holds the team lead with a 320 and Fargo Oak Grove is in second with a 328. Trinity shot a 357 while Heart River was in eighth with a 367. Beulah was 11th at 373.
Nick Myhre of Northern Lights shot a 1-over 73 to hold the Day 1 lead. He’s competing as an individual.
Lance Pender and Nathaniel Knopik were in a six-way tie for 23rd after shooting 87. Heart River’s Zach Miller shot an 88. Trinity’s Willy Jahner and Beulah’s Noah Iverson each had an 89.
