Bulldogs finish 3rd at state girls tournament

CARRINGTON — Don Groll said it was a result he never expected.

But, the Bowman County girls golf coach can’t stop smiling about his team’s finish at the Class B state tournament.

The Bulldogs finished third as a team after two strong days.

“We’re really pleased where we finished,” Groll said.

Paced by state championship medalist Laura Podolak’s 83-72–155, Kindred won with a two-day score of 358-321–679. Hazen was runner-up at 363-353–716. The Bulldogs finished with 371-366–737.

“It was a good day for us and it was a good scoring day,” Groll said. “There were some pretty good scores for the gals.”

Mariah Lockert finished in a tie for 17th after shooting 89 both days to finish with a 178. Kayla Palzcewski had a 94-92–186, Karly Palczewski added a 101-91–192 and Jessica Hill rounded out the Bulldogs’ scoring at 88-100–188.

Heart River’s two golfers had solid finishes, too.

Mary Hlebechuk shot a 89-90–179 and Jada Mattson, a freshman, had an 11-stroke improvement from Tuesday to Wednesday to finish 96-85–181.

“She’s got three more really good years ahead of her,” Heart River coach Kirby Robb said. “She jumped a big hurdle today and started believing in herself.”

Jinny Miller led Hazen with a fourth-place finish at 83-84–167.
