Kay Nicholson weeds her backyard garden on a sunny 60-plus degree Thursday afternoon. Along with the purple violas, otherwise known as Johnny Jump-ups because they bloom early in the spring, her garden is full of plants, including tomatoes, carrots, lettuce, radishes, peppers and more, the 45-year Dickinson resident said. She and her husband (who has since passed on) had five children graduate from Dickinson High School.
