There was no doubt in Tanner Halter’s mind that he wanted to end his high school golf career with a bang.
Halter posted a 74 and was one stroke away from all-state honors at the Class A boys state golf tournament on Wednesday at Heart River Golf Course.
“It’s definitely a lot better than Tuesday,” Halter said. “I just went out there and told myself that I have a play a little catch up today, since that wind set me back. I was really happy ending my senior year with that score.”
The Midgets finished in a tie for ninth place after shooting a 318 on the second day. Dickinson posted a 658 total.
“We sat around the table after our rounds yesterday and the three seniors said, ‘Tomorrow is going to be our last tournament ever,’” Dickinson senior Luke Hanel said. “We all decided that we would focus and shot as well as we could. A 318 is one of the better scores we’ve got this year.”
The Dickinson senior wasn’t exactly pleased with his first round Tuesday — he shot an 83 — and had a two-day total of 157.
Dickinson head coach Sara Berglund said she was pleased with the two-over par end to Halter’s career.
“The conditions were rough yesterday (Tuesday),” Berglund said. “He came out and really stepped it up. I’m really happy for him.”
Hanel, who is the second part of the Midgets trio of seniors, knocked 10 shots off his day-one score and came away with a 79. He finished with a 168
“After the weather and stuff that had a lot of people shooting high, I just hit the ball so much more solid today,” Hanel said. “I had a lot more confidence.”
Overall, a majority of Dickinson’s golfers were able to cut down on their strokes from the first day. Berglund’s main message to the players was improvement.
“I’m pleased with how we played together, because we were able to cut off strokes,” Berglund said. “From day one to day two, it’s a good feeling to improve.”
Dickinson’s one player who wasn’t able to finish on Tuesday was junior Shay Ridl. Back problems had hindered Ridl for the last week, but he was able to tough it out for an 80.
Halter wanted to give credit to Ridl for sticking it out.
“With his back being out of place, that’s pretty hard to come back today,” Halter said. “He was playing smart shots out there just to get the ball up and down.”
The other three scores for the Midgets were senior Austin Fournier’s 85 (168), freshman Carter Donnan’s 88 (180) and freshman Alex Priebe’s 92 (177).
“Everybody shot well and it was a good way to end the 2012 season,” Halter said. “It was nice.”
