SD cowgirl locks up 2 NDHSRA titles at State Finals

BOWMAN — A cowgirl from South Dakota was the big winner Sunday at the North Dakota High School Rodeo Association’s State Finals at Dakota Winds Arena.

Lexus Kelsch of McLaughlin, S.D., was the lone champion in two events, sealing up the title in the barrel racing and climbing out of second place to win the pole bending.

Kelsch earned 33 of the maximum 40 State Finals points to lock up the barrel racing title. She won the first round on Friday (17.307 seconds), took third in Saturday’s second round (17.815) and finished sixth in the short round (18.146).

Kelsch also won the first round of the pole bending Friday in 20.652 seconds, took third in the second round (21.408) and finished 10th in the short round (31.51). She edged Marion’s Layne Larson by one point (86 to 85) for the season title. Larson started the spring part of the season with no points after her horse fell ill in the fall. Using a borrowed horse, she won the second round (20.068) and championship round (20.556) and was second in the first round.

Kelsch and handful of other contestants from South Dakota, Montana and Minnesota compete in the NDHSRA thanks to a National High School Rodeo Association rule that allows contestants to compete in neighboring state.

Keaton Schaffer of Broadus, Mont., was another out-of-state champion and just happened to be one of the most successful cowboys in the NDHSRA. He won the tie-down roping, placing in each round. He was second in the second round (13.45 seconds) and third in the short round (13.31).

He’ll be going to the National High School Finals Rodeo in the team roping and steer wrestling as well after placing second and fourth, respectively, in the season standings of those events.

Tate Benson of Scobey, Mont., and Cotey Hanson of Berthold couldn’t lose the team roping title coming inot the weekend. They placed only 10th in the first round and fifth in the second round.

The Killdeer duo of Logan Schaper and Tate Harris fell just short of the NHSFR despite winning the short round with a time of 8.81 seconds. They finished fifth in the season standings. But, only the top four reach the NHSFR. Schaper won the short round in the tie-down roping in 11.17 seconds.

Southwest North Dakota had its share of state champions too.

Belfield’s Devin Boltz used two round wins, including a 69-point ride in the championship round, to secure the bull riding title.

Halliday’s Skye Schaper, Logan’s twin sister, sealed the season title in the breakaway roping with a first-round win in 3.7 seconds and by gathering points in the second and short rounds.

Richardton’s Dalton Rixen had an insurmountable lead in the saddle bronc riding coming into the State Finals and he showed why over the weekend, winning the second and championship rounds with rides of 77 and 78 points, respectively.

Mandan’s Logan Berg ran away with the bareback riding title despite only winning in the first round. He placed second in the championship round behind teammate Daltin Berger, who had a 70. Berg scored a 65.

Bismarck’s Justice Johnson ran away with the steer wrestling title, placing in all three rounds. He won the first round with a time of 6.65 seconds and was third in the short round (7.16).

Teddi Schwagler entered the State Finals with a huge lead in the girls all-around and goat tying and held on to lock up both. She won the second round of the goat tying Saturday with a time of 8.01 seconds.

Hazen’s Siggy Scheid made a big run at the NHSFR in the barrel racing, winning the second round (17.609) and championship round (17.522) but couldn’t crack the top four. She did, however, finish fourth in the pole bending to reach the NHSFR.

In the boys cow cutting, Chase Lako of Arthur won the second and championship rounds and the average. However, Bismarck’s Colt Roshau held off Lako for the season title by just two points.

Lako had the last laugh though, winning his second consecutive boys all-around championship, beating Roshau by 25 points.

In the girls cutting, the battle came down to a pair of Watford City cowgirls. Saige Feilmeier finished with 110 season points, defeating Sadie Keison by a point and Samantha Jorgenson by three points. Feilmeier won the first round (146) and took third in the second round (132) and held on for the title despite finishing 11th in the short round and failing to score standings points.

The NHSFR is July 15 to 21 at the Sweetwater Events Complex in Rock Springs, Wyo.
