A last-second adjustment helped Travis Ulmer pick up his second feature victory of the season Saturday night at the Southwest Speedway.

Ulmer took home the win in the Wissota Street Stocks to move into the season point standings lead. He entered the night tied for the lead with Josh Olheiser.

“I felt great” said Ulmer.

Ulmer said a late call to swap out a tire before the race helped him out.

“My dad made the call” Ulmer said with a grin. “I guess it paid off. We had a fast start.”

Ulmer made the adjustments based on the track, on which there were three cautions in the first 10 laps of the 20-lap feature.

“It was a little rough, but if you could pick the right spot, you could get around it, so that’s why I stayed a little high” said Ulmer, a Dickinson native who drives out of Mandan. “I stayed out of the rough stuff and I think that’s how I stayed up in front.”

Cole LaMontagne won his first ever feature race in the Modifieds Division. Despite the four cautions in the race, the Bismarck driver was able to take a solid win.

“From my vantage point, every driver was driving clean out there” LaMontagne said with a smile. “It was a good clean race.”

Scott Gartner of Bismarck got his second feature win in the Pure Stocks. He managed to hold off the field after an early caution, and didn’t forfeit the lead after.

“The smooth driver wins the race every time” said Gartner.

Gartner didn’t have any problems with the slick track, especially in the feature race.

“In the heat race, the track was pretty greasy, but in the feature race I stayed out of that and came out on top.” Gartner said.

Dickinson’s Derek Nitschke took his third win of the year in the Thunder 4 feature race. But it was no easy race for him.

“I raced my heart out” Nitschke said with a smile. “It was a good, clean race.”

Cautions played a large role in the race. At the start, Nitschke lost a big lead to Cory Reisenauer, who won the Thunder 4 heat race earlier in the evening.

“Cautions were a big part of it” Nitschke said. “It brought all of the cars back together and gave me a chance.”
