Ryan Weber is just having fun.
The 18-year-old from Dickinson took a little down time for the Fourth of July before the two-day North Dakota Motocross Association races at the Southwest Motocross Association Track which start at 10 a.m. Saturday.
“I just want to go out there and have fun at my hometown track,” Weber said. “I want to ride well for my family and friends that will be there.”
Weber sits in first in the NDMA’s Open B Division with 224 points. He leads Garret Roen of Douglas by 11 points. Weber is also second in the 250cc B Division with 232 points and trails Roen by four points.
The number of riders could range anywhere from 200 to 300 competitors. In the first race of the NDMA event in Dickinson on May 6, the SWMA saw 242 competitors at the track.
“We should see riders from North Dakota, Montana, South Dakota, Wyoming, a couple Canadian providences,” SWMA President Luke Krogh said. “We’re hoping to have 300 — we are always hoping to have that big number. We got close in May.”
Weber, a Dickinson resident found recent success this season winning the Open B race in Bismarck on June 24.
“I won some races and I definitely want to keep winning and keep my points lead in the series right now,” he said.
Performing well hasn’t always come easy for Weber. Ryan’s dad, John, said something finally clicked in the last couple years.
“There are kids that it comes real easy and then there are kids that have to work real hard at it,” John said. “Ryan’s had to work for everything he’s got. He’s just now starting to come into his own.”
Ryan’s motocross future is uncertain. He doesn’t know where motocross is going to take him, but all he’s worried about is building relationships, meeting people and having a good time.
“I’m just having fun with it and maybe one day it will take me to the next level, where I can make some money,” Ryan said. “Right now, I’m not worried about that too much.”
John fully supports Ryan having fun. Where he places doesn’t constitute a good or a bad day — the main priority is being safe on the track.
“I say a prayer every time he goes out on the track and rides,” John said. “I ask the good Lord to help him. Not so much for winning, but to keep him safe.
“I’ve always wanted Ryan to have fun. I don’t care how well he does, but I want him to have fun with it.”
The 18-year-old racer is thankful his dad is so supportive and with John being a former racer, he is more than happy to help his son out by buying equipment, parts and gear.
“I was in motocross when I was a kid and I never really had everything,” John said. “I really wanted to get Ryan everything he needed for motocross and to see him take off with it is really pleasing.”
The weather could play a factor at the Southwest Motocross Track this weekend. The recent hot and dry conditions have caused the crews to hold water to wet the ground for competition Saturday and Sunday.
“It’s been pretty hot,” Krogh said with a laugh. “It’s pretty dry out there and we’re saving all our water for the two days of competition. We are conserving everything we can.”
