$9M Tolna Coulee control structure being dedicated

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — Officials are dedicating a $9 million flood control structure on the Tolna Coulee in North Dakota.

The Corps of Engineers finished work in May on the structure designed to prevent an uncontrolled spill of Devils Lake floodwaters into the Sheyenne River. The coulee is a natural outlet between the river and the lake that reached a record level last summer after nearly two decades of wet weather.

The dedication ceremony is Thursday morning. The commander of the corps’ Mississippi Valley Division and Gov. Jack Dalrymple are to speak.

The corps expects to hand over the project to North Dakota's State Water Commission later this summer. The commission will be responsible for operation and maintenance.
