USA College Sports, Inc., has announced the creation of the Biesiot Award, an award recognizing the most outstanding NAIA football scholar-athlete of the year.
The award, named after longtime Dickinson State head coach Hank Biesiot, honors excellence in athletics, academics and community service. The award will be presented Jan. 14 at the second annual Hansen Bowl, an all-star small college football game named after small college football media pioneer Don Hansen.
Biesiot was elected into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 2006 and enters his 37th season in 2012 with 255 career victories, two away from the NAIA career wins record.
Nominations for the first honoree that will be awarded following the 2012 season will be made by the college presidents with supporting letters and credentials provided by the head football coach and sports information director.
After the NAIA members of the Hansen Bowl Executive Board screen the nominations and narrow the field to 10 finalists, the 25-member Biesiot Award national selection panel will rank the candidates 1-10 to determine the recipient.
DSU opens its season at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1 with its first-ever Frontier Conference game against Rocky Mountain College at the Badlands Activities Center, which will be renamed after Biesiot in October.
