Free throws help Class B girls overcome turnovers, beat Class A

• Class A boys explode in 2nd half, dominate Class B

BISMARCK — The Class B All-Stars didn’t let turnovers stunt their scoring abilities.

Class B held on to one-point lead at halftime and went on to defeat the Class A All-Stars by the same margin, 57-56, in the first game of the 2012 Lions All-Star basketball series on Tuesday night at the Bismarck Civic Center.

Class A had the advantage in turnover differential (14 to 23), but Class B made up for its mistakes by going 11-for-13 (85 percent) from the free-throw line. Class A was 7-for-12 (58 percent) from the line.

Carrington’s Becca Scheer led Class B with 12 points and had three 3-pointers. Her high school teammate, Sierra Rosenau, scored just two points but grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists.

Beach’s Kelcee Dykins posted six points and Dickinson Trinity’s Nikki Grinsteinner supplied four points for Class B.

Class B’s led 36-35 at halftime.

They put together a 15-3 run in the second half to build up a 43-28 lead with 16 minutes, 17 seconds remaining. Class A then went on a scoring surge and took a 56-54 lead with 1:33 to play.

Scherr and Rosenau combined for the final three points at the free-throw line with less than 1:30 remaining to seal the win for Class B.

West Fargo’s Rachel Weir led Class A with 10 points. Mandan’s Mic Longtin added nine points.

Williston’s Dani Clarke had an all-around performance with six points, four rebounds and four assists.

The teams meet for the second of two games at 6 p.m. CDT today at the Fargo Civic Auditorium.
