NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) — The Three Affiliated Tribes is asking the federal government to hold in trust a 9,300-acre ranch so it goes off local tax rolls.
The North Dakota tribe bought the 14 ½-square-mile Figure Four Ranch between Lake Sakakawea and the Little Missouri River in 1999 and converted it to a tribal bison operation. The federal Interior Department is asking officials in North Dakota for comment on the tribe's trust request.
The ranch straddles Dunn and McKenzie counties. Dunn County State's Attorney Ross Sundeen said that there are several agencies involved in the matter including the state Land Board, so the proposed transfer could get complicated.
