LONDON — All three of the Dickinson State alumni competing at the Summer Olympics fell short of the final round Sunday at Olympic Stadium.
Competing for their home country of the Bahamas, former Blue Hawks Derrick Atkins, Trevor Barry and Ramon Miller all came up just a bit short.
Atkins and Miller lost in the semifinals of their sprints and Barry missed on his qualifying height in the high jump.
Atkins finished 12th overall in the 100 meters with a time of 10.08 seconds. He missed the finals by sixth-hundredths of a second.
He finished fourth in his heat won by Jamaica's Yohan Blake and finished fourth overall as part of a pack that chased Blake (9.85) and runner-up Tyson Gay (9.90).
Jamaica's Usain Bolt went on to win the gold medal in the finals with an Olympic record of 9.63 seconds. Blake was second with a personal-best of 9.75.
Miller ended up 10th in the world in the 400 meters, running a time of 45.11 seconds.
He finished fourth in his heat, won by Luguelin Santos of the Dominican Republic, and missed the finals by .12 of a second.
"I want cry! But I thank God. Running by Faith!" Miller posted to his Facebook page after the race.
Barry missed all three of his high jump attempts at the qualifying height of 2.26 meters, topping out far short of his personal best at 2.21 meters in the preliminary qualifying round.
While the Olympics are now over for Atkins and Barry, Miller will compete for the Bahamas later this week in the 1,600-meter relay. It's an event the Bahamas has a chance to win with Miller running alongside 400 finals qualifiers Demetrius Pinder and Chris Brown.
The relay's preliminary round is at 4:35 a.m. MDT on Thursday.
It's unknown whether Miller will compete in the preliminary because the Bahamas can use alternates in the qualifying round. Miller won a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 though he only ran in the relay's preliminaries and not the final.
