Ulmer wins two features at Southwest Speedway

Travis Ulmer has won feature races before, but never in two classes on the same night.

“I’ll take it,” said Ulmer, a Dickinson native now living in Mandan.

Ulmer won both the Wissota Street Stocks and IMCA Modifieds features Sunday night at the Southwest Speedway.

He managed to hold off Josh Olheiser to seize the feature win in the Street Stocks and then edged veteran Darrell Bauer to win the IMCA Modifieds feature.

“It seemed like the car was getting worse and worse as time went on,” Ulmer said. “It seemed really skatey, so I jumped held the bottom line and tried staying ahead.”

Conditions can make or break a car race at the Southwest Speedway, and Sunday night was no exception.

Due to a rain delay, the track’s races were postponed from Saturday night to Sunday, and Ulmer took advantage of the track.

“It rubbered up, but it was a fun track,” Ulmer said. “You’ve got to have your hats off to the guys who run this.”

After his win in the Streets, Ulmer immediately found his Modified car and got ready for his next race.

“I just got out front and stayed in the same line,” Ulmer said. “When I was racing the Streets it seemed to work, so I stayed there and it paid off.”

The Modifieds win was Ulmer’s first in the class at the Dickinson track.

“I’ve just been blessed,” Ulmer said. “We’ve been having some problems in this car.”

Dickinson’s Cole Lewis came away with the Pure Stocks feature victory after winning his heat earlier in the evening. It was the first feature win of his career.

“Car felt amazing,” Lewis said. “I made a lot of changes during the off week.”

Lewis nearly lost the win to Scott Gartner when lap traffic cut him off.

“It almost cost me,” Lewis said. “I guess I got kind of lucky.”

After the rain delay, the track was dustier than some expected.

“With the dust and the sun, I didn’t know where my line was,” Lewis said. “You could hardly see anything out there.”

In the Thunder 4’s, Dunn Center’s Cody Hulse drove away with his first ever feature win.

“It’s been a blast this year,” Hulse said. “It’s about time.”

Before the Thunder 4’s feature race, the track was watered to decrease dust that began being kicked up. This created a more slippery track for the drivers.

“It was slick,” Hulse said. “I had to slow way down into the corners.”

The Speedway’s next night of racing begins at 7 p.m. Saturday. There are only three nights of regular points racing left this season.
