After 37 years in Bismarck, House of Color expanded into Dickinson around Mother’s Day weekend.
The installation crews were going to Dickinson more and more as residents and transplants were renovating and building houses, General Manager Dave Scherr said.
After searching for retail space, President Gary Hanson decided to build a small strip mall and warehouse on the north side of town, Scherr said. House of Color occupies two of the five suites.
“We thought it would be advantageous to put a selection center out of (Dickinson),” he said.
The company sells a variety of flooring and paint, as well as offers interior design services, provided in Dickinson by Linda Sykora, interior design consultant/sales.
“I’m a very detailed person,” she said. “To me detail is important, but not everybody those things are important to. I always like to work towards what the customer likes and what they want to do.”
Sykora had previously worked at Stark County Social Services, but found her passion for design when decorating a home she built with her husband. The life-long Dickinson resident had 17 years design experience between floral and interior before coming on to House of Color in June.
She likes to start with the owners at the beginning of the process, from the floor plan on.
“I like to work individually with the people,” Sykora said. “I go into their homes,” to get a feel for the project.
Floor manager Kevin Kelley has worked in flooring for 30 years, but this is his first experience in a retail venture.
“I’ve always been in commercial, so learning residential products,” has been the biggest challenge with the transition, he said.
The crew at House of Color stays up on trend by watching design shows on HGTV and DIY, as well as using social media, Scherr said.
“House of Color is on Pintrest and Facebook,” he said. “We have people ‘pinning’ things all the time, so I go on there and see what’s in and not.”
A lot of the crew lives in Dickinson but Scherr and a few other employees split their time between locations and make the commute a few days a week.
“I haven’t done it in the winter yet,” he said, adding that it’s not a big deal so far.
