Blue Hawks pick up first volleyball victory since 2010

MAYVILLE — It took two seasons, but Maura Bronte got her first win as Dickinson State’s head volleyball coach.

The Blue Hawks swept Waldorf College (Iowa) 25-13, 26-24, 25-21 after falling to former Dakota Athletic Conference foe Mayville State 25-21, 25-21, 25-17 in its season opener at a triangular tournament held at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.

“I think the whole win built confidence,” said Bronte, whose team went 0-26 last season. “They battled back after that first loss.”

The Blue Hawks fought back from a 24-18 deficit in the second set against Waldorf and before closing out the victory.

DSU last won a match on Nov. 10, 2010. It was a three-set victory over Minot State at home in the semifinals of the Dakota Athletic Conference Tournament.

While DSU’s lineup is far from set, Bronte said actual game action helped move the team closer to having a starting six.

“We definitely got an idea about it,” she said.

DSU has a week off before going to a tournament hosted by Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, where it will play four matches against teams from the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

No statistics were available from either match.
