Stix n' Twigs is back.
The downtown lunchtime restaurant reopened two weeks ago under new ownership, with a few tweaks, owner Brenda Schumacher said. The café is a venture she opened with her daughter, Rosanne Kanski.
“I’m hoping to put my signature and twist on everything,” she said.
The cuisine will remain organic, but the eatery will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner during the week and for breakfast and lunch on Saturday, Schumacher said. It will serve breakfast and lunch until fully staffed.
“I hope it becomes a community hub where people can come and enjoy a warm meal,” she said. “I’d love to have, on Saturdays, people come in with their guitars and sit around and sing and play together.”
Schumacher missed one of her favorite restaurants, and rather than just miss it, she decided to buy it.
She’s cooked for oil field crews and six kids, but never in a formal restaurant setting.
“I’ve done construction work, I’ve worked in the oil field and I’ve never worked this hard, I don’t think,” said Schumacher’s right-hand man, back of house manager Paul Lindquist. “It’s nice that it’s climate controlled, you don’t have to worry about the rain.”
Everything is made from scratch, even the syrup for the buckwheat pancakes, Schumacher said. She serves scones and muffins and is experimenting with gluten free recipes for other pastries and baked goods.
“There’s a misconception,” she said of organic cuisine. “It’s not just tofu and sprouts, it’s home-style cooking, the twist is, it’s healthy.”
The menu will rotate with daily specials, but a few things, like roasted red pepper soup, will always be available, Schumacher said.
After trying lunch Lucas Brown, originally from Michigan, and his coworker, Lincoln Franklin, originally from Oklahoma, decided to try breakfast Monday morning.
“Lunch was good so we wanted to see what breakfast was all about,” Brown said.
The downtown location will be a boon for the bistro.
“I love the downtown atmosphere,” Schumacher said. “It kind of brings the feeling of community back that we tend to lose.”
The staff is the biggest asset to Stix n' Twigs right now, she said.
“I could not do this without a great staff,” she said.
Stix n' Twigs is located at 20 First St. W. downtown. The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch, but once it’s fully staffed hours will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the week, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and closed Sunday. Call 701-483-7849 for daily specials and hours.
