Ewoniuk sets Heart River rushing record in opener

WATFORD CITY — Seth Ewoniuk became the leading rusher in Heart River football history Friday night as the Cougars ran away with a Class 1A nonconference victory over Watford City at Fred Fridley Field.

WATFORD CITY — Seth Ewoniuk became the career leading rusher in Heart River football history Friday night as the Cougars ran away with a Class 1A nonconference victory over Watford City at Fred Fridley Field.

Ewoniuk had 241 yards rushing and five touchdowns on 12 carries as Heart River won its season opener 48-13.

Heart River coach Dave Hendrickson said coming into the game that the senior needed 165 yards to break the Belfield-South Heart co-op’s record for rushing yards.

Cole Hecker added 93 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 13 carries for the Cougars.

Ewoniuk had scores of 35, 3, 80, 38 and 5 yards. Hecker scored on a 35-yard run in the first quarter and a 3-yard run in the third.

Quarterback Keegan Thompson led Watford City. He had a 60-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Bates in the second quarter and a 48-yard TD run in the fourth quarter, finishing with 65 yards rushing.

Heart River hosts Southern McLean at 7 p.m. next Friday.
