Midgets’ Binstock takes 4th in cross country opener

JAMESTOWN — Jackson Binstock didn’t waste much time making his presence known.
The Dickinson sophomore finished fourth individually with a time of 17 minutes, 23 seconds and helped his team finish eighth at the “Orr”iginals Invitational season-opening cross country meet Friday at Hillcrest Golf Course.
“We didn’t really have a race plan going in,” Dickinson head coach James Mousseau said. “We just wanted to see where we were at. After about the first mile he took the lead. He lead for about a mile and half and was overtaken by some of the other guys.”
Binstock was two seconds behind Fargo Shanley’s Seb Startz, who was third at 17:21. Bismarck Century’s Cataldo DiDonna won the 5,000-meter race (16:51) and Fargo Davies’ Branden Scheel was runner-up (17:19).
Fargo Davies used 61 points to win the meet, while West Fargo came in runner-up with 98 points.
Dickinson senior Dylan Gress (19:21) placed 44th, Collin Bren (19:28) in 47th, Zach Obrigewitch (19:43.8) in 52nd, Jacob Kuntz (20:07) and Jamison Gray (20:08) followed in 59th and in 60th, respectively.
“We have this all this potential, it’s just molding it,” Mousseau said. “I think we are definitely headed in the right direction.”
On the girls side, senior Meleah Leiss was the top Dickinson finisher in 19th at 17:17. Sophomore Emily Tyrrell was five seconds behind her, finishing 23rd at 17:22.
“I think that’s a great 1-2 punch,” Mousseau said. “I think having Emily, who is only a sophomore and having Meleah, who is senior, I think it’s good for the younger girls and good for the older girls to have that mix.”
The Midgets placed fifth as a team, while West Fargo had 71 points and Davies 78 to take first and second, respectively.
Jamestown’s Alison Allmer ran strong at her home course for a 23-second win the 4K race over runner-up Katie Bye (16:02) of Davies.
The Midgets also had Kelli Pavlicek and Shelby Stoltz placed 49th (18:30) and 50th (18:31), respectively, while Katie Pavlicek was 56th (18:44).
Dickinson’s next cross country meet will be its lone home meet of the regular season with the Becki Wells Invitational on Sept. 8 at the Heart River Golf Course. Heart River Golf Course is also the site of the Class A and B state cross country meets.
“It’s a lot more comfortable for us,” Mousseau said. “The kids know that course and they are familiar with the surroundings.”
