VALLEY CITY — Dickinson Trinity fell into an early hole and couldn’t dig itself out.
Valley City, which had its scheduled season opener against Carrington scrubbed due to thunderstorms last week, built a 20-point cushion and weathered Trinity’s second-half comeback to claim a 28-18 Class 2A nonconference victory on Friday night.
Austin Svenningson had passed and ran for touchdowns in the first half to put Valley City up 20-0. He added the game-clinching 4-yard touchdown pass to Taylor Lentz, who also caught his first TD pass, in the fourth quarter.
Trinity did most of its work through the air.
Quarterback Ben Gordon helped the Titans (1-1) battle back with three unanswered touchdown passes, one each in the second, third and fourth quarters.
Gordon found Jacob Good on a 65-yard TD pass in the second quarter, cutting the Hi-Liners’ (1-0) halftime lead to 20-0.
He hooked up with Jacob Volk on 11- and 46-yard TD strikes in the second and third quarters, respectively.
Gordon was 7 of 20 for 177 yards and had 57 yards rushing. Good had four catches for 114 yards.
“We showed some brilliance, a little bit of coming back and moving the ball a little bit,” Trinity head coach Randy Gordon said. “But they had long, sustained drives that ate up the clock.”
Shane Undem rushed for 91 yards and a 5-yard, first-quarter TD for Valley City.
Anthony Holstad rushed for 147 yards on 28 carries.
“They really ran the ball well,” Randy Gordon said. “They controlled the line of scrimmage on offense.”
Mason Heth rushed for 67 yards on 11 carries to lead the Titans.
Trinity is back home next week as it opens up West Region play against Carrington at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7.
