U-Mary beats Concordia-St. Paul to open season with win

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Craig Bagnell threw three touchdown passes in less than 3 minutes and the University of Mary started its season with a victory Saturday afternoon.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Craig Bagnell threw three touchdown passes in less than 3 minutes and the University of Mary started its season with a victory Saturday afternoon.

Bagnell threw for 359 yards and three touchdowns as the Marauders defeated Concordia-St. Paul 32-26 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference football game, which was also the season opener for both teams.

Dickinson native Tyler Steffan led the Marauders with 101 yards receiving on four catches, though he didn’t score a touchdown.

He fumbled a 66-yard pass from Bagnell, which was picked up by Mary receiver Myron Baldoz-McArn in the end zone. A two-point conversion pass from Bagnell to Brian Sandy put the Marauders (1-0, 1-0 NSIC) ahead 32-19.

Nick Jolliffe, Elby Pope and Sandy each caught touchdown passes from Bagnell. Jolliffe scored his with 8 seconds left in the first half and Pope and Sandy scored within the first 2½ minutes of the third quarter.

Mike Wagner, a Killdeer High School graduate and Mary’s captain as a safety, had an interceptions.

Concordia-St. Paul quarterback James Peterson was 30 of 48 for 436 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions.
