Kayla Barke put a triple bogey on her scorecard, but never panicked.
The Williston senior took a seven on No. 11, a hole that included a bad lie beneath some trees and a three-putt finish.
She played par golf the rest of the way into the clubhouse and shot a six-over-par 78 to win medalist honors at the Dickinson Invitational girls golf tournament on Thursday at Heart River Golf Course.
“I played really well today, except for that triple,” Barke said with a sheepish smile. “I wish I could go back and do that hole over.”
Barke had the steadiest day on a course that played slow despite a crisp wind that blew most of the round. Aside from her triple bogey, Barke bogeyed the par-4 No. 7 and a pair of par 5s (Nos. 3 and 9) on the front nine. Otherwise, she played par golf.
The win was especially nice for Barke, considering she bested Dickinson juniors Rachel Jahner and Riana Cooper, who finished second and fourth, respectively, with scores of 82 and 83.
“It does feel pretty good,” Barke said. “She (Jahner) had a few rough holes. I knew I had to come through after that triple and try to get her.”
Jahner birdied No. 11 to pull within one stroke of Barke, but double bogeyed No. 14 and bogeyed No. 18 while leaving several putts short or just off the mark.
“I definitely left some putts out there,” Jahner said. “Putting wasn’t great, chipping was OK. I was hitting the ball alright. I just could have done better. My putts were right there, they just weren’t dropping.”
Bismarck Century’s Annie Nelson had a hard charge in the back nine, sinking birdie putts on Nos. 14 and 16 to tie Jahner for second with an 82.
Nelson led a stead Century team to an easy team win. The Patriots had a 354 with Dickinson coming in second with an 82. Century’s Alex Liedholm and Jamestown’s Sierra Bennion tied for fifth place with 90s.
“We all are usually pretty right close together, score-wise,” Nelson said. “Today was a little bit different. That’s OK though.”
Dickinson head coach Sara Berglund said she is seeing improvement in her team, though the Midgets had been as little as three strokes behind Century in previous tournaments.
“With it being our home course, I was hoping we’d come in with some low scores. But it played a little bit tougher today,” Berglund said. “I’m not real disappointed with how we played. I know some of the girls are disappointed. I know they wanted to play better.”
