Trinity upsets No. 3-ranked Carrington in OT

CARRINGTON — A near-perfect 2-minute drill and a defensive stand on a two-point conversion gave Dickinson Trinity perhaps the biggest win of the season so far in Class 2A’s West Region.

Ben Gordon threw three touchdown passes — including the game-tying 1-yard toss to Isiah Binstock with 13-seconds left in the fourth quarter — and rushed for another TD in overtime as the Titans knocked off No. 3-ranked Carrington 25-24 on its home field Friday night.

“It’s huge. It’s huger than huge,” Trinity head coach Randy Gordon said. “I’m really proud of our kids, I’m proud of our coaching staff. We all had a great night.”

The Titans drove 70 yards in the final 2 minutes to tie the game 18-18. They faked the extra-point kick and misfired on a pass, setting up overtime.

In overtime, Ben Gordon had a 7-yard TD run to put Trinity ahead. The eventual game-winning extra point was scored by sophomore kicker Conner Friske. It was his first career point.

The Titans’ defense held Carrington out of the end zone on the two-point conversion following Casey Murphy’s 3-yard TD run.

Ben Gordon was 17 of 31 for 233 yards passing while rushing for 52 yards on 15 carries. Binstock and Jacob Volk were his trusty targets.

Volk had nine catches for 123 yards, including a 47-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter. Binstock had 54 yards on five receptions. He gave Trinity a 6-0 first-quarter lead after hauling in a 17-yard strike from Ben Gordon.

Carrington quarterback Cole Hendrickson didn’t let his team down either, throwing a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown passes. The Cardinals took an 18-12 lead on his 49-yard TD pass to Seth Abaurrea late in the fourth.

“They’re rated No. 3 and they come back and got the lead with 2 minutes to go,” Randy Gordon said. “Ninety-nine percent of the teams would have given up. We didn’t. We were in that 1 percent.”
