Dickinson edges Jamestown in 5 sets

The five-set match between West Region opponents Dickinson High and Jamestown High had a little bit of everything Thursday night.
Dickinson head coach Jay Schobinger said, in a five-set match, fans do get to see a little bit of everything.
“That pretty much had it all,” he said with a smile.
After rolling through opponents at home, the Midgets used a strong fourth set to set up a 26-24, 11-25, 24-26, 25-19, 15-11 win at the DHS gymnasium.
“They were good competition,” Dickinson senior outside hitter Abby Grove said. “We started a little slow at the beginning, but we picked it up at the end.”
Grove, who had a game-high 20 kills, was being gracious on Dickinson’s slow start. Despite falling into a 4-0 deficit, the Midgets rebounded to take a 13-9 lead. Jamestown got called for a lift to end the first set and the Midgets grabbed the 26-24 win.
The pickup Grove was referring to came in the fourth set.
The Midgets, like in their previous two home matches, jumped out to a 19-11 lead and never let go. The Blue Jays made a slight comeback, but Dickinson seniors Ali Moody and Rachel Schroeder didn’t let the lead set slip away.
Moody supplied another triple-double with 15 kills, 28 assists and 17 digs. Schroeder added 12 kills and two blocks. Jess Priebe tacked on 20 digs, while Mackee Hoffmann had 16.
“Once you win the fourth set, you have the energy to go out and win the fifth set,” Grove said.
The momentum from the fourth-set win translated easily into the fifth for the Midgets.
Dickinson held a commanding 13-5 lead after Moody supplied three kills in a span of four points.
“We made a little bit of a rotation switch to get a little better matchup and that helped,” Schobinger said. “The girls just picked it up. It was very obvious in the beginning of the fifth set. The energy, the emotion was there.”
Barring a complete breakdown, the set and match appeared in hand.
The breakdown didn’t happen, but the Blue Jays went on a 6-0 run to pull within two points. Moody supplied the 14th point on a kill and a lift violation ended the match.
“I think everyone will agree it probably wasn’t the prettiest display of volleyball ever put on,” Schobinger said. “We’ve got to give those girls credit, because they found a way to fight through it and come out of there with a win.”
The first set was the least of Dickinson’s worries and Jamestown allowed zero wiggle room in the second and third sets. That was with the help of middle hitter Addie Eamon, who led the Blue Jays with 15 kills and four blocks. Jamestown won the second set 25-11 with ease.
“She’s (Eamon) done a great job for us,” Jamestown head coach Sara Hegerle said. “This is her second year on varsity and she gotten strong, more confident, she can reach so high over the block. We tell her not tip, once in a while she’ll do, but I really want her to continue to swing at the ball.”
The third set was closer, but Dickinson was forced to play catch-up majority of the time. The Midgets didn’t hold the lead once, but were tied four times at 1, 2, 15 and 24. The Blue Jays also had Siri Jystad with 12 kills, while Josie Hegerle added five aces, 22 assists, 14 digs and one block.
This was Jamestown’s second consecutive five-set loss. The Blue Jays lost to Bismarck Century at home on Tuesday.
“I’ll tell you the truth, I don’t think we played very well tonight,” Sara Hegerle said. “On Tuesday, we played Century and went five with them. We lost in five, but I thought it was a great battle.”
The Midgets will have a light practice schedule before traveling to Mandan on Tuesday and hosting the Dickinson Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
“We going to do a little team stuff,” Schobinger said. “We’re actually heading out to Medora and do some team things.”
