Midgets’ Jackson Binstock chases Demons' Jake Leingang, takes 3rd

MANDAN — Dickinson’s Jackson Binstock didn’t see Bismarck High’s Jake Leingang during the Becki Wells Invitational, but the sophomore kept pace with North Dakota’s top runner Saturday.

Leingang won the individual title at the Mandan Invitational and helped his team to a first-place finish as Binstock finished third.

“It was outstanding to put it in one word,” Dickinson head coach James Mousseau said of Binstock’s performance. “It’s also a testament to the Bismarck kids. They set a good, fast pace and Jackson just went with them.”

Bismarck finished three runners in the top five and ended with 29 points as Leingang won with a time of 15 minutes, 35 seconds. Binstock was 15 seconds behind the leader with a time of 15:50.

Dickinson finished sixth as a team. It was Binstock’s highest finish this season after placing fourth in the first two meets of the season.

“I was really pleased with everyone’s effort on the men’s side,” Mousseau said. “Everybody is doing these hard weeks of training and they came through today.”

Colin Bren has been battling tendentious in his knee, but he was able to fight through the discomfort to take 38th (18:00), Gabe Dschaak was 42nd (18:12) and Dylan Gress in 47th (18:18). Killdeer’s Calum Blankenship placed 37th (17:57) and Bowman County’s Michael Palczewski finished in 75th (19:24).

On the girls side, the Midgets continued to execute their race plan by finishing near each other again. The race plan helped Dickinson to a fourth-place team finish.

“It’s a good sign,” Mousseau said. “They know their time to get to and they’re giving their effort every day to get to that spot.”

Emily Tyrell led Dickinson in 20th with a time of 16:01, while the next five Midgets placed within eight spots.

Shannon Stockert placed 37th (17:05), followed by Katie Pavlicek in 42nd (17:13), Shelby Stoltz in 43rd (17:14), Taylor Ihmels in 44th (17:16) and Meleah Leiss in 45th (17:17).
