BISMARCK — North Dakota's Board of Higher Education has approved policy changes to give more authority to the university system chancellor.
The changes put new chancellor Ham Shirvani in charge of any search for a new college president.
It specifies that North Dakota's college presidents report to the chancellor. Before, the lines of authority were blurrier.
The board approved the changes Wednesday.
The changes also say college presidents get a three-year contract when they begin their jobs, but they're only eligible for one-year renewals. Before, renewals could be for five years.
An initial draft of the new policy allowed the chancellor to fire a college president for misconduct.
That was taken back. The Board of Higher Education is keeping its authority to fire a president.
