Midgets hold off Williston 16-6 for West Region win
WILLISTON — At this point in the Dickinson High football team’s season, a win is a win — even if it wasn’t as pretty as the Midgets’ may have hoped it would be.
WILLISTON — At this point in the Dickinson High football team’s season, a win is a win — even if it wasn’t as pretty as the Midgets’ may have hoped it would be.
“We had a job to do,” Dickinson head coach Dennis Morris said. “We got the job done right. Just not in the fashion we wanted to.”
The Midgets scored all of their points in the second quarter and played solid defensively to defeat Williston 16-6 in a Class 3A, West Region game.
The win kept Dickinson (3-3, 2-2 West) in the playoff hunt with just three weeks remaining in the regular season.
But, it didn’t come as easy as the Midgets had hoped.
Michael Cherwinski scored on a 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and Jordan Krieg caught a 3-yard TD pass from Dylan Skabo to bookend a safety on Preston Theurer’s recovered fumble on a punt snapped in the end zone.
That was all the scoring Dickinson could muster.
“We took a lot of breaks on offense and it was very evident,” Morris said. “Second quarter, we came out and really played well.”
Dickinson had a touchdown pass and a touchdown run called back because of penalties in the first quarter and also had a player drop an open touchdown pass in the end zone.
“Our chances were there all night,” Morris said. “We had some iffy penal-ties and we let it affect us. Instead of getting back up on the horse and riding, we let it affect us. We didn’t dig out of a hole very well.”
Williston quarterback Marcus Noes-ke rushed for 65 yards on 16 carries. He scored the Coyotes’ only touch-down on a 4-yard run late in the fourth quarter, which capped a 15-play, 76-yard drive.
The Coyotes (1-5, 0-3 West) had just 120 total yards.
Cherwinski finished with 83 yards rushing to lead Dickinson while Skabo was 9 of 18 for 100 yards passing with two interceptions and had 40 yards rushing.
