“Insurance agent” isn’t usually a profession people think of when the descriptor “interesting person” comes to play, but Farmers Insurance Agent Mike Hutchison could change that.
Hutchison became a licensed Farmers Insurance agent in June, working out of his home for the first few months, but, as of last week, has set up shop within All American Travel in the North Park Plaza at State and 15th.
The outgoing Portland, Ore.-native has no problem introducing himself to strangers.
“Everybody has a story and they’re all interesting,” Hutchison said. “That’s my take, and it’s fun to be able to learn those stories.”
One of the things Hutchison likes most about his career is that he doesn’t have to sit at a desk all day.
“Being an insurance agent allows you to go out and meet people,” he said. “You can get out there and go see everybody else.”
One of those people is 22 Fuel and Repair (formerly Manning Easy Stop) owner Jade Ziman.
“You can give him a call any time of the day,” he said of Hutchison. “And he’ll help you out. When he was giving me quotes and stuff, he did the running around, I didn’t do the running around.”
He got started in insurance with his wife’s aunt, and began to enjoy the profession.
“I liked what I was doing, I liked insurance, I liked talking with people, seeing families grow, the whole history of it,” Hutchison said. “It was pretty good.”
He left after about a year to work in auto sales, but came back to insurance this summer.
“Owning your own business, you can set your own hours,” he said. “If the kids have something that needs to be done, or they have an event or something at school, I can make it.”
He rents office space from All American Travel, who recently moved from the mall. Owner/manager Craig Steve believes the two businesses will complement each other well.
“It’s planting the seed,” he said. “It’s what it’s all about.
Farmers is the third biggest insurance agency in the United States. It cover auto, business, home, life and several other insurance needs.
“We like not only give a great product, but we like to teach and make our clients understand insurance, the need of it,” Hutchison said of his parent company. “Versus just trying to sell them a policy.”
And insurance is an industry that won’t die.
“Insurance, it’s just fascinating, because everybody needs it,” Hutchison said. “Nobody wants to pay for it, but everybody needs it.”
Hutchison is located at North Park Plaza at 1674 15th St. W. in Dickinson.
