Killdeer will be the lone high school football team in North Dakota hosting a postseason game on a neutral field.
The Cowboys (6-3) will play Velva (4-4) at 5 p.m. Saturday at Dickinson's Biesiot Activities Center in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs. Killdeer is the No. 2 seed from Region 4 while Velva is the No. 3 seed from Region 3.
The game was moved because of poor field conditions at the Killdeer High School football field, Killdeer athletic director Logan Midthun said.
The field was regraded and reseeded last summer and Midthun said some of the seeding didn't take, leaving a dirt patch around midfield.
Any precipitation on would turn that part of the field "into a mud pit," he said.
"We just said we're not going to mess with it," Midthun said.
