RUGBY — A 27-yard field goal by McKenzie Miller in the fourth quarter not only lifted Carrington into the Class 2A playoffs, it knocked Dickinson Trinity out of the postseason.
Miller’s field goal in the final minutes of the game helped Carrington beat Rugby 23-14 on Tuesday night.
With Beulah beating Dickinson Trinity in the first half, the Cardinals needed to win the game by seven points in order to earn a postseason spot.
Had Carrington won by only six points — it was leading 20-14 before into Miller’s field-goal attempt — Rugby and Trinity would have advanced to the playoffs.
Instead, Miller’s boot gave Carrington the West Region’s No. 3 seed while Rugby will be the No. 4 seed. Minot Ryan had clinched the West’s regular-season title and the No. 1 seed and Beulah will be the No. 2 seed.
Trinity was left as the odd team out.
