Blue Jays beat Dickinson for 8th straight win

JAMESTOWN — One streak came to an end for the Jamestown volleyball team on Tuesday night, but the one that really matters continued for the red-hot Blue Jays against Dickinson High.
Jamestown junior Addie Eamon had 15 kills and junior Josie Hegerle tossed up 30 assists, leading Jamestown past Dickinson 26-24, 16-25, 25-11, 25-23 in a West Region match.
The Midgets’ win in the second set brought to a close Jamestown’s consecutive shutout streak against West Region opponents that dated back to Sept. 18. But that’s just fine with the Jays. The win pushed their winning streak over region opponents to eight straight.
“We need to stop thinking like we’re not supposed to win,” Jamestown coach Sara Hegerle said. “We’re playing these big teams and in the backs of our minds we think, ‘Well, we’re Jamestown. We’re not supposed to win.’ But this volleyball team has proven that we can beat anybody. If we really go out and play hard and compete hard, anything’s possible.”
The Jays avenged a 3-2 loss they suffered against the Midgets (21-8, 7-3 West Region) in Dickinson earlier this season.
Tuesday night’s rematch appeared as if it would be very similar after the teams battled in the first set.
Both teams led by as many as three points in the set before a 7-0 run by Dickinson produced a four-point 22-18 advantage. But back-to-back blocks by Eamon and Billie Buchanan that went down for points helped the Jays knot it at 22-22. Eamon posted another kill down the stretch, while Jamestown’s Julina Niemeier recorded game point with her second of three ace serves in the match.
The second and third sets were as different as night and day for both teams.
In the second, Jamestown (22-7, 11-2 West Region) was out of system most of the game and had difficult digging Dickinson serves to get any kind of offensive momentum happening. The Midgets put the set to bed with an 11-3 run.
Dickinson’s Abby Grove posted a match-high 17 kills in the match. Ali Moody led the Midgets with 33 assists.
“It was nothing special. It’s just the nature of this game,” Dickinson coach Jay Schobinger said of his team’s play in the second. “If we as coached figured it out we’d write books and be rich.”
Dickinson piled up four errors in the third set before Jamestown rifled off an 11-3 run to close it out at 25-11.
“They served us off the court,” Schobinger said. “They had better ball control, and anybody who watches these games knows that the team that has a little better ball control usually wins. That was that. We took it to them in the second one and they took it to us in the third one.”
The Blue Jays squandered an 18-7 advantage in the fourth, but managed to hang on to win the game and the match 25-23.
Dickinson sparked a wild 13-4 run to tie it at 21-21. Grove posted four kills, Ali Moody added three of her four kills, while an ace by Hanna Beaudoin and a block by Taylor Cooper all contributed to the remarkable comeback.
“Those are fun matches to be a part of,” Schobinger said. “You still want to come out on top, but you learn things.”
Josie Hegerle was able to find Eamon and Jenna Stilwell for kills down the stretch for the Jays, and match-point hit the floor win a Dickinson pass missed its mark.
“There’s something about Dickinson. I don’t know what it is, but they can get things done,” Sara Hegerle said. “They make big points and they’re tough to defend that way.”
