Hintz, Beulah end Titans’ season with pounding ground game

By that time, Beulah’s Karson Hintz had scored his third touchdown of the game. And the senior running back wasn’t even done yet.
Hintz rushed for 157 yards and five touchdowns in the first half to lead the No. 4-ranked Miners past Trinity 42-6 in a Class 2A, West Region game on Tuesday at the Biesiot Activities Center.
“He (Hintz) had a good game,” Beulah head coach Jim Dooley said. “Up front, we did a nice job. We didn’t have to throw the ball a whole lot. We had a pretty complete game, offensively. That may have been the best we’ve done offensively this year.”
After the Carrington score was final, the Titans (5-4, 4-3 West) needed to overcome the 36-point halftime deficit if it wanted to earn a playoff spot. The comeback didn’t come as the Miners grabbed the No. 2-spot in the West Region.
However, Beulah needed a strong secondary to halt the Titans’ explosive offensive attack.
“We throw the ball very well and that’s our biggest weapon,” Trinity head coach Randy Gordon said. “When you get down like that, you need time and you can’t run the ball four or five times in a row.”
The Miners had 503 total yards, including 428 yards rushing.
Beulah (8-1, 6-1 West) scored on six of their first seven possessions.
“Trinity has a real explosive offense,” Dooley said. “We felt like we had to either score every time or continuously gain first downs to keep their offense off the field.”
In the first five minutes of the first half, every bounce went Beulah’s way.
Trinity’s first offensive possession led to a negative three yards and it was subsequently forced to punt the ball.
Beulah came back with a nine-play, 55-yard touchdown drive capped by a Trevor Zacher 5-yard run.
“Everything was following well,” Hintz said. “The line was opening up big holes. Quarterbacks and receivers stepped up their blocking and we kept it flowing.”
On the ensuing kickoff, the kick ricocheted off Trinity sophomore Jacob Brooke’s leg and back into the hands of the Miners. It took 53 seconds for Beulah to put on its second score on a Hintz 9-yard TD run.
The rest of the first half was all Miners, all the time. Mark Muscha totaled 11 carries for 133 yards, while Cody Nelson added six carries for 85 yards. Nelson also caught one pass from Zacher for 30 yards.
“Those guys are some of the best athletes in the state, in my opinion,” Hintz said. “I’ve played with them my whole life. We can run hard, smart and it’s tough to bring us down.”
When Beulah got near the end zone, the Miners handed the ball off to none other than Hintz.
Gordon, however, said it was the fullback Luke Blood creating space for large gains on the ground.
“We knew that we need to stop Hintz, Nelson and Zacher,” Gordon said. “I think the fullback is one who hurt us a lot.”
Trinity’s lone score was on a 22-yard pass from Ben Gordon to Jacob Volk at the 7:44 mark of the second quarter. Ben Gordon was 17 of 32 for 190 yards and three interceptions. Jacob Good had seven catches for 71 yards, while Volk added six catches for 40 yards.
Trinity had 268 total yards of offense.
Hintz added four more scores to close out the first half with the 36-point lead.
Dooley wanted his team to be focused the entire four quarters, but said they made some mental mistakes during the second half.
“We needed to put together a complete game,” Dooley said. “We wanted to go out and have one good series. We lost focus and got penalties.”
As the season comes to a close for the 21 seniors on the Titans’ roster, Randy Gordon said he’s been very impressed with the mental turnaround.
“I’m very proud of our seniors,” he said. “They’ve come a long ways from last year. Last year, they had a very a bad luck season. They could have come in with the attitude that it’s going to happen again, but they didn’t. I think that’s so important.”
