The North Dakota Department of Transportation and North Dakota Highway Patrol have temporarily closed Highway 12 from its junction with Highway 22 to Hettinger due to a grass fire. The closure is in effect until further notice.

"High winds and smoke from the grass fire near the highway is creating hazardous traveling conditions," an NDDOT press release stated.

The fire is believed to be 60 percent to 65 percent contained, Adams County States Attorney Aaron Roseland said.

The number of damaged acres and the spread of the fire is unknown at this time, but there was significant structural damage, but residential and commercial, in Bucyrus, Roseland said.

The fire started from an unknown source about six miles west of Hettinger. At approximately 8 p.m. it was four or five miles west of Hettinger, he said.

There are no known injuries at this time, Roseland said.
