What a difference a day makes.
Dickinson State scored early and often and there was little the University of Manitoba could do to slow the Blue Hawks down on Saturday night at Scott Gymnasium.
Behind Mariah Duran’s game-high 23 points and Janae Moore’s double-double, the Blue Hawks beat Manitoba 87-57, their second win over the Bisons in as many days.
DSU won its season opener against Manitoba 71-57 on Friday night and seemed to build on the previous day’s victory almost immediately.
“I think our kids are really teachable,” DSU head coach Caleb Harrison said. “We made a couple adjustments. Some teams you make a couple adjustments and it doesn’t transfer to the next game. They just listened, they went out and implemented it. It’s really pleasing to see.”
The rout was on from the opening minutes as DSU (2-0) broke open a 27-5 lead just 8½ minutes into the game.
They led 43-26 at halftime and stretch the lead to 65-33 just 7 minutes into the second half after scoring 11 unanswered points.
Junior Dawne Degel, who missed all but five games last season with a foot injury, had five of her 12 points during the surge.
“We were just hungry,” Degel said. “We knew that we couldn’t just take the first win and roll with it. We need to have a season where we’re hungry every game.”
Duran and Moore led the charge in Friday night’s game and it was no different Saturday.
Moore, a 6-foot sophomore forward from Sidney, Mont., had 14 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. She helped DSU outrebound the Bisons (1-7) 41-25.
Degel, Duran and Moore scored 17 of the team’s first 19 points.
“They’re our sparkplug,” Harrison said. “They’re our Energizer bunnies. When they bring energy, it seems like our whole team plays with energy. We’re expecting them to bring it every single night.”
Duran was 5 of 7 from 3-point range while senior Ashley Jelly was 3 of 4 en route to 16 points.
The Blue Hawks shot 33 of 64 (52 percent) from the field, including 11 of 20 from 3-point range.
Manitoba interim co-head coach Michele Hynes said DSU didn’t throw them off by doing anything differently than it did Friday night.
“We just didn’t respond,” she said. “We didn’t come out and play hard. We kind of folded a little bit. That game is on us in terms of not responding and getting back in it. And they were tough.”
Brittany Koop led Manitoba with 18 points. Sharee Carmona added 10 as the Bisons shot 18 of 53 (34 percent) from the field.
The Blue Hawks are off until next Saturday when they host Black Hills State in the first half of a doubleheader with the men’s team beginning at 5:30 p.m. They play their first five games at home.
Degel said improvement is needed everywhere, especially defensively. Harrison said before the season he expects the team to hang its hat on strong defense.
“Offense is a lot more laidback,” Degel said. “But defensively, we have to work on our intensity and urgency and make sure we’re matched up the way we should be and in the right position.”
