HAZEN — The first meeting between Heart River and Hazen this season was on Sept. 14 in Belfield.

Much has changed in six weeks, including the venue.

The No. 4-ranked Bison took a 27-0 lead at halftime en route to a 41-14 win over No. 3-ranked Heart River on Saturday on a snow-covered field at the Bison Sports Complex during the Class 1A playoff quarterfinals.

Stetson Carr compiled two touchdowns in the first half — one through the air to Nate Leintz, the other on the ground for 4 yards. Carr finished with 15 carries for 242 yards, while going 4 of 9 for 43 yards.

Earlier this year, the Cougars (8-2) took advantage of a Hazen team that was without standout tailback Briar Bornemann winning 28-20.

Bornemann supplied an 11-yard run in the second quarter and posted a 90-yard kick return for a touchdown in the third quarter. The junior running back had 17 carries for 122 yards.

The Cougars first touchdown was on a 35-yard pass from Tyson Kudrna to Seth Ewoniuk. Cole Hecker added a five-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Ewoniuk had 14 carries for 74 yards, capping his career as his school’s all-time leading rusher.

Cole Hecker added 16 carries for 69 yards. Kudrna went 2 of 4 for 26 yards and no interceptions.

Hazen’s Nate Leintz only had five carries, but he scored two touchdowns.

The Bison (8-2) now travel to face No. 1-ranked Stanley-Powers Lake for the Class 1A semifinals on Saturday.
