MANDAN — The Dickinson High volleyball team set its sights on one match with the results either advancing the Midgets to the Class A state tournament or ending their season.
The Midgets are moving on to state after a 25-21, 25-15, 25-14 sweep of Bismarck St. Mary’s on Saturday in a state-qualifier match at the West Region Tournament.
“We told the girls last night (after the loss to Jamestown), ‘You’ve got to have a short memory. It’s done, it’s over with. You went out, played hard, now we have to refocus and do the same thing,’” Dickinson head coach Jay Schobinger said. “They did just that. They came out, played hard, played well and did everything we needed to do. Now, we extend our season another week.”
Dickinson (26-10) will be the No. 3 seed from the West Region at the Class A state tournament, where it will play East Region No. 2 seed Fargo Shanley at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Minot State Dome.
“At the beginning of the season, I said there are a lot of even teams through our state and anybody who gets there has a shot,” Schobinger said. “We haven’t seen Shanley since the Bismarck tournament (in late August) and it will be one of those matches where you prepare for yourself and adjust as you go.”
Rachel Schroeder, a senior middle blocker, led the Midgets with 12 kills and one block. Senior outside hitter Abby Grove added 10 kills. Senior setter Ali Moody had seven kills, 20 assists, four aces and four digs.
Jess Priebe, a senior libero, had a team-high six aces and nine digs for the Midgets. Junior setter Madison Schobinger posted 15 assists and four aces.
“You want to play well enough to get every kid in there to get some West Region tournament experience and everybody got in,” Schobinger said. “Everybody contributed to the win, which was really nice to see.”
For the Saints (16-16), Katelyn Schaffner and Kaylyn Herold each had six kills, while Mary Roller added five kills, five digs and two assists. Allie Reisenauer and Kala Frank each supplied eight aces.
