State volleyball tournament: Red River sets records in return to title match

MINOT — Hadley Steffan and Payton Salquist set Class A state tournament records to help Grand Forks Red River rally to beat West Fargo and reach today’s state championship match.

Red River beat the Packers 25-19, 20-25, 24-26, 25-22, 15-10 in the semifinals Friday at the Minot State Dome. It was only the second five-set match of the season for the Riders and first time they’d rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win.

Salquist set a state single-match record with 60 assists. Steffen set a state single-match record with 32 kills.

Red River will play in the state title match for the fourth straight season. The Roughriders are the defending state champions and won in 2009.

GRAND FORKS RED RIVER: (kills-blocks-aces): King 0-0-0 (23 digs), Anderson 10-5-1, Salquist 1-0-0 (60 assists), Lancaster 1-0-0, Steffen 32-2-1, Goodman 1-2-0, Bush 18-4-2, Adam 4-0-0, Ripplinger 0-0-1.

Consolation semifinals

Fargo Shanley 3, Fargo Davies 0

Alivia Fraase posted 19 kills and two blocks to help Fargo Shanley to a 25-16, 25-19, 25-19 victory over Fargo Davies in the consolation semifinals of the North Dakota Class A state volleyball tournament on Friday at the Minot State Dome.

Jessica Anderson added eight kills for the Deacons (23-10). Shanley plays Jamestown at 11 a.m. today in the consolation championship match.

Senior outside hitter Kali Erickson had nine kills and two ace serves to pace the Eagles (25-13).

Davies plays Bismarck in the seventh-place match at 9 a.m. today.

DAVIES (kills-blocks-aces): Papachek 4-0-1, Erickson 9-0-2, Woodbridge 1-2-0, Langlie 0-0-0 (11 kills), Olson 3-1-0 (18 assists), Grabarkewitz 2-1-0, Bolstad 2-0-0.

SHANLEY: Allex 0-0-1, Fraase 19-2-1 (10 digs), Brenner 5-0-1 (15 digs), Freeberg 2-0-0 (37 assists), Little 2-0-0 (11 digs), Anderson 8-2-0, Mickelson 5-0-1 (11 digs).

Jamestown 3, Bismarck 0

Senior middle blocker Siri Jystad had 11 kills leading Jamestown to a 32-30, 25-8, 25-18 win over Bismarck in the consolation semifinals.

Adeline Eamon added six kills and four blocks for the Blue Jays (27-10).

Ashlee Hilzendeger paces the Demons with 10 kills and two blocks.

Jamestown plays Fargo Shanley in the consolation championship at 11 a.m. today. Bismarck (23-15) plays Fargo Davies in the seventh-place match at 9 a.m. today.

Semifinals

Langdon 3, PR/F-L 2

Langdon, whipped early and down 2-0, rallied to beat Park River/Fordville-Lankin 10-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-12 in the semifinals of the Class B state volleyball tournament at the Minot State Dome.

The Cardinals play Kindred for the state title at 7 tonight.

Abbey Braaten was the big gun for Langdon with 22 kills, with Madison Hart adding eight.

Kirsten Johnson’s 17 kills paced the Aggies.

LANGDON (kills-blocks-aces): Fetsch 0-0-1 (24 digs), Downs 4-0-0 (33 assists), Anderson 1-1-0, Johnson 5-0-4, Weekes 0-0-1, Braaten 22-0-3, Hart 8-1-1, Kartes 2-1-0.

PARK RIVER/FORDVILLE-LANKIN: Myrdal 2-1-4 (18 digs, 12 assists), Vold 9-1-2, Welch 0-0-1 (11 assists), Swartz 7-0-0 (16 assists), Lehar 6-0-1, Johnson 17-2-2, Porter 4-2-0.

Linton-HMB 0

Fresh off its first-ever victory at state on Thursday, Kindred followed with a 25-13, 25-23, 25-15 win over Linton-Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock in the Class B state volleyball tournament semifinals.

Kindred senior outside hitter Kellie Schmit paved the way with 18 kills and seven ace serves.

Like most teams playing Kindred this fall, the Lions keyed in on trying to stop Schmit.

Alexandra Erickson added 11 kills for the Vikings. Nicole Nieuwsma posted 14 kills to lead the Lions (26-11).

Redeemers 3, Ray 2

Ashley Koppinger totaled 33 kills, five blocks and five ace serves helping Minot Our Redeemers to a 25-21, 24-26, 22-25, 25-19, 15-11 victory over Ray in the consolation semifinals on Friday.

Emily VanLith added 21 kills for the Knights (36-11-1). Our Redeemers plays Flasher in the consolation championship at 11 a.m. today.

Hanna Gillund and Alaury Liesener each had 11 kills to lead Ray (36-4-1).

Ray plays Dickinson Trinity in the seventh-place match at 9 a.m. today.
