MOORHEAD, Minn. — Dickinson State had three of its ranked wrestlers pick up victories by decision, but the team came up well short in its first dual of the season Friday afternoon.
Minnesota State Moorhead defeated the Blue Hawks, ranked No. 10 in the NAIA, 33-9 at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
“We physically got off the bus, I don’t think we mentally got off the bus,” DSU head coach Thadd O’Donnell said. “It definitely wasn’t a performance that we wanted.”
Bryden Lazaro picked up an 8-4 win over Mitchell Dunlap at 125, Brad Steele beat Mariano Portillo 8-6 at 149 and Jesse Hellinger defeated Lucas Moderow 6-0 at 184.
DSU gave up four pins to the NCAA Division II Dragons.
“In a dual, a pin is a huge thing and I think we got behind and I think guys tried doing too much, trying to make up a lot of ground too fast,” O’Donnell said. “They just needed to compete and not worry about where we were at as a team.”
DSU stayed in Moorhead for Finn Grinaker Cobber Open, which begins at 9 a.m. CST today at Concordia College.
