Dickinson High senior Jacob Shypkowski came into the opening match of the wrestling season giving up more than 20 pounds to Minot High sophomore Michael Lambert.
It didn’t matter.
Shypkowski, who weighed in at 161, came out fighting and set the tone for the Midgets with a second-period pin at 182 pounds on Tuesday night.
Dickinson piled on in the lower weights en route to a 41-30 victory in the West Region dual and season opener for both teams at the DHS gymnasium.
“It all started with those guys we had to bump,” Dickinson co-head coach Pete Dobitz said. “The momentum kind of got going on our side right away just by the fact that we got after it.”
The Magicians took an 12-6 lead early after senior Demetreus Roby scored a 6-2 decision over junior Chris Sickler and senior Nick Nesdahl pinned Midgets freshman Ashton Schatz at heavyweight.
Dickinson responded with six consecutive wins, including three pins and two major decisions.
“Any time you’re giving up bonus points, it’s going to make it hard on the kids that are going to try and make up for that,” Minot head coach Nolan Spooner said. “They get pins and we just get wins. That’s a big difference, especially if you’re going to qualify as a dual team.”
Freshman Caden Haugen (106), junior Antonio Burkey (113) and freshman Jaret Lee (120) all pinned their opponents while sophomore Austin Hutzenbiler followed up with a 6-5 decision over senior Jorey Bartsch at 126 pounds.
Haugen was down three points when he scored a takedown and pinned seventh-grader Brody Armstrong. Lee was trailing 7-6 going into the third period, but scored a late takedown and stuck Benham with 30 seconds remaining. Burkey, who moved to Dickinson from Las Vegas this year, got a second-period pin.
Dickinson junior Devin Berger took an 18-4 major decision against Minot senior Jesse Hoffart at 132 pounds and Matt Berg shut out Gabe Nehlsen with an 8-0 major decision at 138 to put the dual squarely in Dickinson’s favor, 35-12.
“All of our new guys, all of our little guys, they put out a lot,” Shypkowski said. “I’m proud of them.”
The Magicians, however, didn’t go down quietly. With four matches remaining, four pins would have given them the victory — and they almost pulled it off, scoring pins in three.
Minot senior Cody Haugen pinned sophomore Dillon Clark in 2:55 at 145.
Senior Brian Rabe got an escape with 5 seconds remaining in the third period to tie his 152-pound match with Midgets sophomore Clayton Tangen and force overtime. He pinned Tangen 34 seconds into the extra period.
The difference was 160-pound junior Michael Cherwinski, who scored two takedowns and a three-point near fall in the first period and pinned Minot sophomore Matt Marler 45 seconds into the second period to clinch the dual for the Midgets.
Kimani Benjamin pinned Michael Dobitz in 30 seconds at 170 pounds to end the dual.
Aaron Bernal, who moved to Dickinson from Wayne, Neb., bumped up two weight classes from 170 to 195 to fill an open spot and went the distance with Minot senior Dayne Haman, a returning state-placer. Haman won an 8-4 decision early in the dual.
The Midgets have a bit of a break before a West Region dual at Bismarck St. Mary’s on Thursday, Nov. 29 and Pete Dobitz said the Midgets need to shore up some things before then.
“We’ve got a little bit we need to work on, but overall, we’re happy with our conditioning at this point in our season,” he said.
