DSU library cuts lower level hours on Saturdays

Certain areas of the Stoxen Library at Dickinson State University could be restricted when classes begin for the spring semester.

Following a recommendation from the vice president of the Academic Affairs Council, the lower level of the library will not be staffed — basically meaning the lights will also not be turned on — during regular library hours from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturdays, depending on the discretion of library management.

Director of Library Services Rita Ennen made the suggestion to the council during its meeting on Monday that the library be closed on Saturdays due to lack of student use. Following the meeting it was decided by DSU Vice President of Academic Affairs Cynthia Pemberton and Ennen that the lower level — which includes a computer lab with 18 computers, periodicals, DVDs and the facility’s Academic Success Center — would not be staffed.

Ennen noted Wednesday that the area would still be available for use upon request.

“This is simply a way to better allocate our staff resources,” Ennen said. “We have computer labs on both levels. What is available on the lower level that isn’t available elsewhere in the library are the periodicals, DVDs and the curriculum library. If a student wishes to access those areas during Saturday hours, they will still be able to.”

DSU Student Senate Executive Committee President Erik Arnold said he rarely uses the library on Saturdays and doesn’t view the change as being disruptive for students.

“I would say of all the days the library is open, Saturday would be the least populated day,” Arnold said. “I don’t think this is a big deal at all and I think if there was an outcry from students, it’s something they would probably change back.”

Ennen’s original proposal to the council included cutting all Saturday library hours, except for the two Saturdays prior to final exams. Ennen said the change is not cost-related and that it allows her the freedom to use staff member hours for busier days.

“Three Saturdays ago, I had one student in the library the entire afternoon,” Ennen said. “That’s been our trend this entire year. The most we’ve had in on a Saturday is eight people.”
