KYLE, S.D. — Senior forward Jarek Hansen scored a career-high 35 points as the Dickinson State men’s basketball team chalked up a wild victory over Oglala Lakota College on Thursday night.

Five Blue Hawk players scored in double figures as they outran the Bravehearts 111-96.

“It was a tough environment to play in,” DSU head coach Ty Orton said. “We had several chances to blow it open, and all of a sudden it was a 12-point game.”

Oglala Lakota kept it close, but DSU won the game from the free-throw line.

The Blue Hawks (3-3) were 33 of 44 from the stripe. Hansen led the way, going 13 of 14.

Senior John Hanstad had 19 points after going 11 of 13 from the line and hitting a pair of 3-pointers. Senior Matt Lee and junior Philip Johnson Jr. each scored 15 points and senior Johnie Sanders added 10. Junior Robbie Morey hit three 3-pointers for nine points.

“We’re starting to understand the difference between good shots and great shots,” Orton said. “There were some guys who really played well.”

Willis Zephier had 23 points to lead Oglala Lakota (3-6). Brice Hornbeck added 18 and Steven Pourier Jr., had 14.

The Bravehearts were 19 of 37 from the free-throw line and 8 of 31 from 3-point ragne. Zephier hit three 3-pointers.

It was the highest-scoring game and first time DSU has gone more than 100 points in Orton’s tenure as DSU’s coach. The last time DSU scored that many points was when it beat Montana Western 115-106 on Nov. 26, 2005.

The Blue Hawks head south again to face South Dakota Mines at 4 p.m. Saturday. They open Frontier Conference play on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at home against Rocky Mountain College.
